Scientists have discovered a hidden passage inside the Great Pyramid of Egypt, authorities announced on Thursday (March 2). This discovery was made thanks to the ScanPyramids project. This international scientific mission is studying the interior of such monuments as part of a collaboration between French, German, Canadian and Japanese universities and a group of Egyptian experts.

This tunnel could “protect something”

Since the end of 2015, she has been peering into the belly of the pyramid of Cheops, the largest of the three pyramids of Giza, using cutting-edge non-invasive technologies. These allow you to see through the monuments in order to discover any voids or unknown internal structures, and to learn a little more about the methods of construction still shrouded in mystery.

Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass, who heads the scientific committee overseeing the project, said it was “quite possible” than the tunnel “protect something”. “In my opinion, it protects the true burial chamber of King Cheops”, he insisted. In 2017, ScanPyramids had already revealed the presence of a huge cavity, the size of an airliner, in the heart of this monument 139 meters high and 230 meters wide.
