School started, another 200 teachers to find

While the bell for the start of classes has rung for a week, there is still a shortage of more than 200 full-time teachers in schools in Quebec, reports the most recent report from the government.

According to the Ministry of Education, which publishes a weekly inventory, it was 210 teachers that were missing last Wednesday in Quebec schools. This figure had risen to 502 the previous week.

It is at the school service center in Montreal, the largest in the province, that the situation is most pressing. There are 79 positions left to fill.

In northern Quebec, the Cree school board was looking for 50 full-time teachers.

However, this assessment is not complete: 13 school service centres, five of which are located in Montérégie, and two school boards (English Montreal and Kativik) did not provide their figures to the ministry.

This data only includes full-time positions. School principals believe that if part-time teaching positions, which are legion in schools, are taken into account, the number of missing teachers would double.
