School hit by Israeli strike in Gaza

Hamas’ health ministry said the strike killed 30 people on Saturday.

An Israeli strike hit a school in the central Gaza Strip on Saturday, July 27. “The Khadija school, which housed a makeshift medical unit in the Deir al-Balah area, was targeted [par une frappe qui a] “30 martyrs and more than 100 injured”the Hamas Health Ministry said. For its part, the Israeli army said it had carried out an operation in the school in Deir al-Balah, targeting the “terrorists” who operated there.

This attack is “a new demonstration of brutal, excessive violence”said Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris in response. “Targeting an area populated by displaced families is inhumane and despicable”he added, believing that Israel continues to use force “disproportionate” in a war that leaves a number of civilians dead and injured “unacceptable, especially among children.” Simon Harris reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire, as Dublin officially recognised Palestine as a state at the end of May, along with Madrid and Oslo.

The head of European Union diplomacy Josep Borrell also reacted and called for a “political solution” to end the “madness” in the Gaza Strip. “A ceasefire must happen now. International humanitarian law must be respected. Humanitarian assistance to civilians must be delivered on a large scale. Only a political solution can end this madness.”Josep Borrell said on X.

“Yet another attack on a school used as a shelter for internally displaced people in Khan Younis… At the same time, an already very fragile population is being forced to move elsewhere again and again, with no end in sight”the head of European diplomacy warned in another message.

In the southern Gaza Strip, nearly 182,000 Palestinians have fled Khan Younis since the start of a new Israeli operation on Monday, according to the UN. In recent months, the Israeli army has returned to several areas of the Palestinian territory, from where it had said it had driven Hamas.
