At the end of classes at a school in Nîmes (Gard), there are no students. The teachers exercised their right of withdrawal and the establishment is closed on Friday February 9. The day before, gunshots rang out near the school in the afternoon. It is located right in the middle of the neighborhood, in the heart of the traffic, next to the lookouts. Teachers have been warning for years.
The school already facing these problems in 2021
“We are told that it is like that. (…) I do not think that in many places we accept that children go to school in the midst of trafficking and violence of this kind”, deplores Jérémie Bonnin, CM1-CM2 teacher at Georges Brugier elementary school. The school was already surrounded by traffic in 2021. Years later, the teachers still feel abandoned. According to the prefecture, in Nîmes, arrests of drug traffickers have increased by 40% over the last four months.
