(Dublin) Scottie Scheffler experienced more stress than desired, but he still won the Memorial tournament on Sunday.
Only six players did better than normal in the final round.
Scheffler recorded his worst final round score in almost two years with 74, two strokes higher than par.
It was still enough to beat fellow American Collin Morikawa by one stroke and win his fifth title of the year.
Scheffler started the round with a four-stroke lead and remained in the lead.
He finished the tournament at 280, eight shots under par.
Canadian Adam Hadwin finished in third place, four shots behind the winner, after a 74.
He was in contention until late, before ending the day with three straight bogeys.
“It’s a tough place to close the books,” Scheffler said. It was a pleasant test. I like it when it gets difficult. I didn’t do much to stand out today. I’ve done just enough. »
Morikawa made a birdie with a 30-foot putt at 12e hole, on the way to a 71.
Scheffler is the first since Tom Watson, in 1980, to earn five victories in a season before the United States Open.
Scheffler finished in the top 10 during an 11e tournament in a row.
Hadwin’s third-place finish puts him ahead of compatriot Corey Conners for the second available spot on the Canadian team heading into the Olympics.
