American Scottie Scheffler handed in a card of 66 (minus-5) a few hours after being arrested by the police in the morning to stay in the fight at the PGA Players Championship on Friday.
His compatriot Collin Morikawa (65) quickly took the lead with five birdies in a row. He was in the lead when he finished his round. Another American, Xander Schauffele (68), then beat him to 130 (minus-12) at the end of the day, the day after a record round of 62.
Tiger Woods (77) made two triple bogeys and was eliminated. He finished with a cumulative score of 149 (plus-7).
Scheffler, ranked number one in the world, was heading to Valhalla around 6 a.m. when he found himself in a traffic jam, unaware that a pedestrian had been fatally struck by a bus. He was arrested after being unable to follow police instructions.
Canadians Adam Svensson (69), Adam Hadwin (72) and Corey Conners (71) were respectively at 139 (minus-3), 140 (minus-2) and 141 (minus-1) after two rounds. Their compatriots Taylor Pendrith and Nick Taylor were trying to avoid the ax at the time of writing.
The representative of the maple leaf Mackenzie Hughes (70) was dismissed.
