Cyclone Belal is approaching Mauritius, where the alert level has been raised. Mauritians were surprised by the flood which hit the south of the country on Monday January 15.
Torrential rains fell on Mauritius, washing away dozens of vehicles. Motorists took refuge on the roofs. In amateur images, a man fights against the current to get out of his car, another breaks his rear window to help a motorist stuck in the passenger compartment.
The cyclone expected 70 km south of the island
A 50-year-old man died after a fall. In one morning, the alert went from 1 to 3 on a scale of 4. Cars ended their journey in a parking lot, embedded in each other. Cyclone Belal, which was supposed to spare Mauritius, finally changed course and hit the island. In some neighborhoods, the water rose to more than a meter. The cyclone is expected to pass 70 km south of the island on Tuesday morning, a serious threat according to meteorological services.
