Saudi Arabia’s “large-scale” military operation follows a deadly attack blamed on the Houthi rebels.

The response of the Houthi rebels was not long in coming. On Saturday, December 25, tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen reached a new level. Shortly after Saudi Arabia announced the start of a military operation “in large scale” in Yemen, the Houthi rebels have promised “the Saudi regime will carry out painful operations as long as it continues its aggression and its crimes”, by the voice of Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree, according to a statement on the rebels’ Telegram channel.
The military operation launched by Saudi Arabia on Saturday is a response to the first fatal attack attributed to the Houthi rebels in the Saudi kingdom in more than three years. The kingdom’s civil defense announced that two people, including a Saudi and a Yemeni, were killed in the attack, in the Saudi region of Jazan, bordering Yemen. “A projectile fell on a commercial building (…). Since 2015, the Saudi kingdom has intervened in Yemen, at the head of a coalition to support the government forces, at war for seven years against the Houthi rebels. The latter, close to Iran, often strike Saudi territory from Yemen.
