Red Wings win 4-1 against Sabers

Patrick Kane broke a tie late in the second period, allowing the Detroit Red Wings to end their seven-game losing streak by defeating the Buffalo Sabers 4-1 on Saturday.

The Red Wings desperately needed a win to stay alive in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference. They are trying to participate for the first time since 2016.

Christian Fischer, Daniel Sprong and Lucas Raymond also made the red light shine for the local favorites. James Reimer made 25 saves.

Tage Thompson was the only scorer for the Sabres, who had won their last three games. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 22 pucks as the club attempts to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011. He slipped to within five points of the Red Wings with the loss.

Senators defeat Islanders 4-3 in overtime

Brady Tkachuk scored on a power play in overtime to complete his hat trick and the Ottawa Senators defeated the New York Islanders 4-3 on Saturday.

Joonas Korpisalo made 30 saves for the Senators, who have won three straight games after losing seven straight. Ridly Greig also flashed the red light in victory.

Senators forward Tim Stützle had three assists, one more than teammate Drake Batherson.

Bo Horvat forced an extra period by tying the game with 28 seconds remaining in the third period. However, he was in the penalty box for holding an opponent when Tkachuk ended the match.

Matt Martin and Kyle Palmieri also scored for the Islanders, who suffered a third straight loss. Semyon Varlamov stopped 26 pucks.

Senators defenseman Jake Sanderson left the game midway through the third period after twisting his leg in a fall near the boards.

Five points for Panarin in a Rangers victory

Artemi Panarin had two goals and five points on Saturday, helping the New York Rangers win 7-4 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Chris Kreider and K’Andre Miller each provided a goal and two assists.

Adam Fox, Mika Zibanejad and Kaapo Kakko also scored for the Rangers, who have won four of their last five games.

Jonathan Quick made 34 saves, earning a sixth victory in his last seven outings.

Bryan Rust scored a 20e goal for the Penguins, who also saw John Ludvig, Lars Eller and Valtteri Puustinen hit the target.

Tristan Jarry stopped 17 shots before being replaced by Alex Nedeljkovic early in the third period, with the opponent leading 6-3.

Nedeljkovic then blocked all four shots he received.

Panarin has seven goals and 24 points in 14 games.

He scored a 500 on Saturdaye moves to the National League.

Panarin is at 93 points this season. He is the first player in Rangers history to amass at least 90 points in three consecutive seasons.

The Penguins have lost eight of their last 10 games.

They could experience a second year in a row without a playoff appearance, after 16 straight appearances in spring ball.

Vejmelka makes 37 saves and the Coyotes beat the Devils 4-1

Karel Vejmelka made 37 saves and the Arizona Coyotes beat the New Jersey Devils 4-1 on Saturday night.

JJ Moser, Dylan Guenther, Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller hit the mark for the Coyotes. Nick Schmaltz participated in three goals for his team.

Keller also assisted on Guenther’s goal, reaching the 400-point career mark. Shane Doan is the only other Coyotes player to reach this plateau since they’ve been in Arizona.

Nick DeSimone scored the only goal for the Devils, who have lost six of their last eight outings. They were four points behind for the eighth and final place giving access to the playoffs in the Eastern Association.

Kaapo Kahkonen made 12 saves before giving way to Nico Daws. The latter repelled 16 pucks.

Vasilevskiy stops 47 pucks in 5-3 Lightning win

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 47 shots to guide the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-3 victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night.

Steven Stamkos, twice, Darren Raddysh, Michael Eyssimont and Nikita Kucherov moved the strings for the Lightning, who have won four of their last five games.

Vasilevskiy made 16 saves in the second period, as his team was outshot 18-3.

The Lightning hold a four-point lead over the Detroit Red Wings for first place among drafted teams in the Eastern Conference.

Sam Reinhart scored two goals while Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, who suffered a second straight loss.

Sergei Bobrovsky finished the game with 11 saves.

The Panthers, who had won eight of their last nine games before their small losing streak, started the evening with the best record in the NHL.

Nylander leads Blue Jackets to victory over Sharks, 4-2

Alex Nylander scored two goals and the Columbus Blue Jackets ended a three-game losing streak on Saturday, winning 4-2 at the expense of the San Jose Sharks.

Nylander also took part in the goal of Johnny Gaudreau, himself author of two assists.

Boone Jenner was the other goal scorer for the Jackets, while Daniil Tarasov made 39 saves.

Fabian Zetterlund and Henry Thrun fought back for the Sharks, who have lost their last three games.

Magnus Chrona blocked 16 shots.

San Jose has only one victory in 13 games.

The Blue Jackets will play again on Sunday evening at home, against the Winnipeg Jets.

Guentzel makes the difference in shootout for Carolina in Toronto

Jake Guentzel was the only one to score in the shootout on Saturday as the Carolina Hurricanes prevailed 5-4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Guentzel hit the mark in the third round.

In regular time, Sebastian Aho stepped up to the plate with two goals and an assist.

Jordan Martinook and Seth Jarvis also found the back of the net for the Hurricanes.

Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 36 shots, being beaten by John Tavares, William Nylander, Nick Robertson and David Kampf.

Ilya Samsonov also made 36 saves for the Leafs, who were looking for a third straight win.

Brent Burns was taking part in a 1400e NHL regular season game. The Carolina defender is 39 years old.

The Hurricanes will face the Senators in Ottawa on Sunday.

Toronto will play again Tuesday evening in Philadelphia.

Coyle shines in a Bruins victory against the Flyers, 6-5

Charlie Coyle scored twice and the Boston Bruins had the last word 6-5 against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Danton Heinen made it 6-4 late in the third period, after two goals in 1:02 from the Flyers.

John Beecher, Jake DeBrusk, Morgan Geekie also scored for the Bruins, who have won four times in five games.

The Bruins have the best record in the NHL with 95 points, one more than the Florida Panthers.

Last season, the Bruins set league records with 65 wins and 135 points, before being beaten by Florida in the first round.

Joel Farabee (twice), Ryan Poehling, Nicolas Deslauriers and Morgan Frost were the Flyers’ scorers.

The Bruins didn’t get their first shot until six and a half minutes into the first period.

Boston will host the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.

Dallas powered by a 1D thunderous period against the Kings, beaten 4-1

Three goals in the first period led the Dallas Stars to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Thomas Harley, Craig Smith and Wyatt Johnston then scored in less than 13 minutes.

Jamie Benn scored the Stars’ other goal during a power play in the second period.

Scott Wedgewood blocked 27 shots, only giving in to Kevin Fiala at the start of the third period.

Dallas swept the three-game series against the Kings this season, dominating 13-3 in goals.

David Rittich made 25 saves for the Kings, who will play their next three games at home.

Kyrou and Schenn tip the scales in shootout for the Blues

Jordan Kyrou and Brayden Schenn converted their shootout chances on Saturday, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild.

Kyrou and Schenn also scored in regular time for the Blues, who are undefeated in their last three games.

Jordan Binnington made 22 saves, being foiled by Kirill Kaprizov and Marco Rossi in regular time.

Marc-André Fleury blocked 35 shots for the Wild, who had won three games in a row.

Fleury deserved a 75e shutout Thursday, in a 2-0 win against the Anaheim Ducks.

Robert Thomas, of the Blues, collected a 50e passes this season and a 300e point in the National League.
