To fight against illegal dumping, the Val-d’Oise department has decided to use science. Indeed, the department uses images from the Airbus satellite to detect bulky items on its territory.
Today, the tracking of wild dumps is carried out most of the time from the mainland and it is the gendarmes who are in charge of it. And the least we can say is that the fine of 1,500 euros for illegal deposit is not always a deterrent. Field surveys only succeed in one out of four cases. Faced with the despair of its elected officials, the department of Val-d’Oise decided to use great means. A subscription was taken in order to be able to use the images of the satellite of Airbus when it passes over the department. It can detect wild dumps thanks to the contrast of colors on the shots.
