In Guadeloupe, sargassum is making a comeback. These algae are the nightmare of the inhabitants, but also of the restaurateurs, the fishermen and the tourists.

It was a little paradise. But with the arrival of sargassum, a beach in the northeast of Guadeloupe has become almost hell. The tourists there are disappointed. A holidaymaker thus deplores a landscape “distorted”. Roméo Rambinaising, one of the restaurants around this beach, has nevertheless tried everything to get rid of these rotting algae. He ended up throwing in the towel, and closed his establishment.

“Unfortunately, we risk losing the whole month of May because of this. It will represent, for the month of May, between 30 and 40,000 in turnover”, criticizes the restaurateur. Sargassum comes from the Atlantic and invades the Caribbean. On the scale of Guadeloupe, these banks of algae have forced the only maritime link with La Désirade to be interrupted, which worsens the isolation of the island. To deal with the most urgent, the inhabitants of La Désirade call on fishermen to transport them.
