Sarah McLachlan prepares new album and tour

(Toronto) Singer Sarah McLachlan is searching for her purpose in this fractured world.

The Halifax-born singer-songwriter has already broken boundaries with her Lilith Fair tour, empowering a generation of female voices.

As she prepares her first album of original material in a decade, she grapples with how to express her opinions on social and political issues.

“I always considered myself apolitical, but I’m not sure any of us have that luxury now,” she told The Canadian Press in a telephone interview from her home in Vancouver.

I just want to be thoughtful in what I say. I want to let the music speak for me.

Sarah McLachlan is still figuring out exactly what that means for her. She is currently in the studio with producer Tony Berg, known for his work on the album Boygeniusto shape his ideas into a record.

The artist will also embark on a North American tour next month that celebrates the 30e birthday of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, performing the album in its entirety. Shows kick off in Vancouver on May 23 with additional Canadian dates in Toronto on June 19, Laval on June 20, and at the Roots and Blues Festival in Salmon Arms, British Columbia on July 28.

“There’s a lot of nostalgia around me and probably a lot of people. I think it’s my favorite record. It was definitely the easiest record I’ve ever made. There was a lot of joy and pleasure,” the singer said during the interview.

“I think every song has a certain importance. Performing it in its entirety will be a lot of fun and something I’ve never done,” she emphasized.

As for her new album, Sarah McLachlan explains that she had written enough material to go into the studio and see what happens.

“I met him [le producteur Tony Berg] and we connected immediately […] He is like my older brother. As soon as I finish this call, I’m heading to the airport and heading back to Los Angeles. I still have 10 days to go in the studio. It’s so fun to explore,” the singer said.

And what are his compositions about?

“Oh, about the end of the world. Funny things. No just kidding. Am I kidding? »

The singer-songwriter says she reflects on parenthood, being a woman in this day and age and that “society is falling apart.”

“These are questions I ask myself. I don’t have any solid answers yet, but the music will eventually speak to it,” she concluded.
