SAQ | Sales increase in stores along the border with Ontario

The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) has seen an increase in sales in some stores located along the border with Ontario since the start of a strike by workers at the province’s liquor board (LCBO) on July 5.

SAQ spokesperson Linda Bouchard indicated Tuesday that since last week, shelves have been emptying rapidly in more than twenty points of sale located near Ontario.

Mme Bouchard says spirits and ready-to-drink products are selling the fastest. The SAQ has even had to adjust its replenishment schedule to meet demand.

About 10,000 LCBO workers walked off the job on July 5 after negotiations broke down.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union, which represents them, said the main point of contention is the Doug Ford government’s plans to expand alcohol sales.

The Ford government will soon allow grocery and convenience stores to sell “ready-to-drink cocktails,” which are currently only available in Crown corporation stores.

Mme Bouchard says the SAQ has not yet quantified the increase in its sales, because it is currently focusing on ensuring that all its stores are well stocked.
