In Saône-et-Loire, the community has decided to pay general practitioners in order to avoid the creation of medical deserts. A costly initiative that pays off. A total of 70 physicians were recruited.
A few years ago, the inhabitants of Pierreclos (Saône-et-Loire) saw their general practitioner leave, with no one to replace him. After months of uncertainty, a solution was found: a health center with a salaried professional. Dr. Alexandre Castaneda now provides care in the town. Particularity: he does not practice as a liberal, because he was hired by the county council.
For the inhabitants, the fear of living in a medical desert has gone away. “We still have to continue to live, that we continue to be treated”, explains a resident. It all started with an observation seven years ago. Saône-et-Loire had fewer and fewer GPs, and many were close to retirement. The department therefore decided to become an employer. He recruited 70 doctors in all. The budget for this system is eight million euros. It is currently in deficit: the department must finance one million euros each year.
