(Ottawa) Federal Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says the law to crack down on the Iranian regime should be passed within weeks, but he admits there is no specific timeline to hire additional staff to enforce the new sanctions.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a week ago that Canada would bar thousands of Iranian officials from entering the country. Ottawa also pledged $76 million to enforce new financial sanctions against Iranian officials.
Minister Mendicino explained Thursday that it would be necessary to hire 30 new people in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or in the public service in a few weeks, in order to enforce the sanctions.
However, Mr. Mendicino admits on Friday that if the bill makes its way to Ottawa, the hiring itself could take longer.
Sanctions experts say Canada lags far behind other countries in the ability to enforce existing sanctions.
