San Francisco 49ers | Team fires defensive coordinator Steve Wilks

(Santa Clara) The San Francisco 49ers fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks on Wednesday, three days after losing the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Coach Kyle Shanahan announced the decision after one season with Wilks in charge of the defense.

Shanahan called it a “really tough decision,” saying he wants to find a coordinator who will better match the skills of his defensive players.

“We believe this is the best decision for the organization,” Shanahan said. Having concluded that a new avenue is best for us, a change had to be made. »

Shanahan hired Wilks after losing DeMeco Ryans, hired as head coach of the Houston Texans.

After limiting Kansas City to six points in their first nine Super Bowl possessions, the Niners allowed two touchdowns and two field goals on the opponent’s final four drives.

The Chiefs ultimately won 25-22, in overtime.
