(San Diego) Canada’s Bianca Andreescu struggled on serve and lost three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to American Coco Gauff on Thursday at the San Diego Open.

Andreescu had started the final set by breaking her opponent, but while she held a 3-2 lead, the Ontarian was broken twice to finally lose in two hours and 31 minutes.
Andreescu only won 59% of his points on the first serve, compared to 84% for Gauff. The American found a way out despite six double faults during the match.
Andreescu advanced to the second round following a three-set victory over Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova.
Things hadn’t started well for Gauff, who was broken in the first game of the game. However, she recovered this break in the fourth game and won the first set by breaking Andreescu a second time, in the 10e Game.
It was repeated in exact fashion in the second set, but this time the Canadian broke her rival in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead. On his serve, and on his second set point, Andreescu forced a third set.
Gauff will cross paths with the best racquet in the world, Poland’s Iga Swiatek.
Swiatek needed over two hours to defeat China’s Zheng Qinwen in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Having to deal with a light drizzle that caused a 30-minute interruption immediately after the match’s first point and a short stoppage in the second set, Swiatek held off Qinwen to advance to the quarter-finals.
It was the 61e victory for Swiatek on the WTA Tour in 2022. She has held the No. 1 spot in the world rankings since April 4.
The two players were tied 4-4 in the first two sets. Swiatek smashed Qinwen to win the first set, but the Chinese gave her back to the favorite in the second set.
Round three was Swiatek’s business, ending the debate with four straight runs to break Qinwen.
