Quebec midfielder Samuel Piette has been named sole captain of CF Montreal for the 2023 season after two campaigns sharing that responsibility with Victor Wanyama and Kamal Miller.
The team made the announcement Tuesday evening, during the official launch of its season.
Wanyama and Miller will now serve as joint co-captains.
Piette, who is 28 years old, has played the last seven seasons with CF Montreal. He has played 11,487 minutes in 145 games, including 129 as a starter. He had two goals and 10 assists in the regular season.
“I am very proud of this title which indicates that I have the confidence of the club, the head coach and the players,” Piette said in a press release. I want to continue to fulfill this role to the best of my ability to continue to push this team in the right direction, to achieve new goals and to continue to make the fans proud of our team. »
On March 4 against Austin FC, Piette became the player to have played the most minutes in MLS regular season in CF Montreal history, with 11,487 minutes. He thus surpassed Ignacio Piatti (11,427).
“Samuel is a positive leader and an example to follow both on and off the field,” said CF MTL head coach Hernan Losada. He is the player who now has the most minutes with the club, which demonstrates his loyalty and commitment to the organization.
“He is a disciplined player who leads by example and who communicates very well with the whole group in several languages, which allows for a good atmosphere in the locker room. »
Piette helped CF Montreal win their fourth and fifth Canadian Championship titles in 2019 and 2021.
On the international scene, Piette has played 66 games with the Canadian national team since making his debut in 2012, at the age of 17. He was notably selected for John Herdman’s final squad to represent Canada last November at the World Cup in Qatar.
