The Korean multinational Samsung announced Thursday morning the opening of a new facility on Sherbrooke Street West in Montreal, near McGill University, which will have the mandate to develop wireless technologies and advanced robotics.
This center will be added to the center specializing in artificial intelligence that Samsung opened on Sainte-Catherine Street in 2018. This center will be directed by Gregory Dudek, professor at McGill and expert in many technologies associated with AI and robotics. Mr. Dudek is also vice president of research at Samsung Electronics.
The new center will be mandated to develop services and wireless communication tools that will make networks more efficient and more efficient in terms of data and energy consumption. At Samsung, it is believed that AI can play an important role in ensuring the quality of service of mobile networks as demand increases.
“The combination of AI and machine learning technologies will enable transformations that are essential to our daily use of mobile devices and reduce energy consumption,” said Gregory Dudek in a press release.
Samsung’s Montreal researchers will also have the additional mission of developing sensors for robotic systems that Samsung would like to sell to businesses and consumers. This ranges from domestic robots capable of tidying up to robots specialized in sectors such as catering or cleaning.
This announcement of the expansion of its Montreal activities by Samsung obviously delights the Montreal business community. The metropolis currently has more than 600 independent researchers and 14,000 students enrolled in programs related to AI and robotics, which makes it an international center that continues to be recognized, explains Stéphane Paquet, President and CEO. of Montreal International, an organization responsible for attracting foreign companies like Samsung to Montreal.
