Biopics are definitely on the rise in Hollywood: after Bob Marley, Elvis, Elton John and Freddie Mercury recently, the Beatles will finally be entitled to the biographical film treatment. Except that director Sam Mendes will devote one to each of the Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. And this, while Paul and Ringo, dashing octogenarians, are still in this world.

This was announced by Sony Pictures on Monday February 19. The filmmaker, known for his films American Beauty, 1917 and the James Bonds Spectrum And Sky Fall, planned to make each film from the point of view of one of the Fab Four. The biopics will intersect to tell the story of the “four trendy boys” from Liverpool, until their separation in 1970, the press release said.

The producer promises “a unique experience”

“We want to offer a unique, exciting and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different points of view, which tell a single story about the most famous band in history”welcomed producer Pippa Harris. I’m honored to tell the story of the greatest rock band of all time and excited by the challenge“, said Sam Mendes.

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, as well as the families of John Lennon and George Harrison, authorized the use of the Beatles’ image and music to make this “unique cinematic proposition“, specifies Sony Pictures.

Deadline 2027

The Beatles appeared in their own feature films as early as the 1960s – A Hard Day’s Night (1964), Help! (1965), Magical Mystery Tour (1967) and Yellow Submarine (1968). The group has also been the subject of several documentaries, including the recent Get Back by Peter Jackson on the making of their album Let It Be. But this is the first time that the Beatles have given their full support to a fictional, i.e. non-documentary, film about them.

Sony Pictures plans to release the films in theaters in 2027. The California-based company has not specified whether all four films will be released at the same time, but it promises to implement nothing less than a strategy for the occasion.innovative and revolutionary“.
