Salmonella: Kinder Surprise Chocolate Egg Recall

Chocolate eggs from the Kinder brand are the subject of a reminder across the country because they could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

The recalled sweets include the famous Kinder Surprise Eggs, but also Kinder Mini Eggs packaging, Schoko-Bons and assortments of confectionery.

In all, a dozen chocolate products are targeted by the warning issued Wednesday by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The recall by Ferrero Canada – the company that owns the Kinder brand – was triggered as a precaution. No cases of illness associated with the consumption of the chocolates have been reported at this time.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products should discard them or return them to their retailer for compensation.

Salmonella bacteria are responsible for salmonellosis, a disease that usually manifests as severe food poisoning, with symptoms including fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea .

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to this disease.

Foods contaminated with this bacterium show no visible or olfactory deterioration.
