The City of Laval informed certain residents of the Sainte-Dorothée neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon that a preventive notice of non-use of water was in effect. A product used by firefighters during an intervention could be involved.


The City was still carrying out analyzes at the end of the afternoon, but the product in question “could have penetrated the aqueduct network, which it could have contaminated,” said Philippe Déry, head of Public Affairs for the city. City of Laval.

The municipal administration also assured in a press release that the risks to the health of humans and animals who consumed the water in the morning were “minimal”. Residents are nevertheless invited to call 811 in the event of unusual symptoms.

At least 2,200 residences are affected by the notice. “The priority now is to ensure that we evacuate the water that may have been contaminated from the affected sector,” said Mr. Déry.

“We want to restore the situation as quickly as possible, but we will not take any chances,” he assured.

“The buildings located in the perimeter between avenue des Bois, rue Principale and chemin du Bord-de-l’Eau, including Îles-Laval”, are covered by the notice, which “also concerns the streets included within this perimeter.

“Citizens in this area should not use tap water for their personal use or for their pets,” the statement read.

These measures apply until further notice – City teams have been mobilized to restore the situation as soon as possible.

In the meantime, the municipal administration must ensure the distribution of bottled water at the Jolibourg community center. “And we ensure the supply of buildings and establishments which are more sensitive”, such as schools, daycares and establishments for the elderly, said Mr. Déry.
