Saint-Leonard | A commemorative plaque for a pedestrian fatally struck

Ghost Shoes and Bikes Quebec (SVFQ) commemorated Saturday morning the death of a pedestrian in a road accident that occurred two years ago in the Saint-Léonard sector, in Montreal. The organization thus recalls the need to provide safe walking spaces for citizens.

On October 14, 2020, Lucia Tiberio Tamburro was walking on the sidewalk, where Lavoisier Boulevard crosses Ferland Park in Montreal. It was during this trip that the driver of an SUV allegedly collided with the 82-year-old woman.

“He was traveling at 80 km/h in a zone limited to 30 km/h. The victim had no chance,” said the organization Souliers et Vélos Phantoms Québec (SVFQ) in a press release.

Several relatives of the victim, elected officials from the City of Montreal as well as a representative of Piétons Québec attended this gathering in memory of Ms.me Tiberio Tamburro.

The crowd observed a minute of silence during the installation and unveiling of a pair of white-painted shoes and a commemorative plaque erected in memory of the pedestrian.

“This beautiful fall day with perfect weather, she went out for a walk and some fresh air, as usual. We hope that the presence of the memorial will make people think about the importance of acting quickly so that the city in which we live and its public spaces are safe for everyone,” declared Séverine Le Page, spokesperson for SVFQ, at course of the event.

According to the organization, the driver was charged at the time with dangerous driving causing death, but was ultimately acquitted. “He had worked 12 hours straight, getting up earlier than usual, he was driving at almost three times the speed limit and he never braked. For our collective, which fights against road violence and pays tribute to the victims, driving is a privilege and not a right,” denounced Shanti Larochelle, spokesperson for SVFQ.
