The tradition of the descent of the fiery wheel

For several centuries, on the eve of Saint John, the inhabitants of Contz-les-Bains have had the custom of placing a wheel at the top of the Stromberg hill, surrounded by straw, which is set on fire, then they push it so that ‘it descends along the hill ending its course in the Moselle.

If it does not reach halfway up the slope, the inhabitants of Contz-les-Bains owe a basket of cherries to those of Sierck, if it is the contrary, those of Sierck owe a basket of wine to those of Contz. If the wheel reaches the Moselle, the winegrowers are counting on a good harvest.

Enjoy the exceptional setting de Sierck – its medieval fortified castle on one side, the imposing Stromberg on the other – but also a restoration where all the products come from short circuits from our Moselle region.
