A major fire is underway in a Gothic-inspired Anglican church inaugurated in 1842 in Hudson, in Montérégie. The damage suffered by the Saint-James church would at first glance be significant.
Heavy, dense smoke emanated from the roof structure late in the morning. Firefighters had to douse the building copiously to contain the flames.
Several fire departments in the region, including Coteau-du-Lac, L’Île-Perrot, Sainte-Marthe, Saint-Lazare, Pincourt, Rigaud, Terrasse-Vaudreuil and Vaudreuil-Dorion, had to lend a hand to those of ‘Hudson. “There have never been so many fire departments on the same scene in the Hudson region,” says a working firefighter interviewed by The duty and well aware of the situation on site.
Originally built to be a rather modest church, Saint-James Church underwent numerous transformations until 1888. It then took on the imposing proportions that we know it today. The stone building, with harmonious and classic proportions, clearly demonstrates the know-how of local craftsmen of the time. It was designed and built by carpenters and masons from the region. However, its stone tower was not completed until 1845.
The church is freely inspired by Regency style architecture, born at the beginning of the 19th century.e century in England. At the time, the Prince of Wales became Prince Regent, then reigned as King George IV.
Due to this emergency intervention, the citizens of Hudson saw the transparency of their drinking water suddenly altered. However, the water remains drinkable. It should return to normal at the end of firefighting activities. It is too early to know what can be saved from this church, which is important for local heritage.
