The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m., at the intersection of rue des Cascades Ouest and avenue de la Concorde Nord in Saint-Hyacinthe, where there are several businesses and restaurants.

The driver of the dump truck made a left turn to enter Avenue de la Concorde Nord when the pedestrian was crossing the street, according to the Sûreté du Québec.

The lady would then have found herself trapped under the imposing vehicle for a while. A specialized tug had to be called in to extricate the pedestrian from under the truck.

By the time reinforcements managed to extricate the pedestrian, she was in critical condition.

She was then taken to the hospital emergency room, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The driver was also taken to hospital for treatment for shock.

Before considering criminal charges against the driver, authorities are trying to determine the exact circumstances of the incident with the help of on-site reconstruction experts.

Due to work in the area, only red flashers were on at the intersection where the tragedy took place to signal to drivers that they must come to a complete stop.

At this time, the intersection remains closed to traffic to allow the investigation by the Sûreté du Québec to follow its course.
