Calls to 911 were made around 1:45 a.m. for immediate assistance in a residential block on Drouin Avenue in Saint-Hyacinthe. On site, at least twenty residents were evacuated and taken care of by the Red Cross, and redirected to temporary accommodation resources if necessary.

Among them was an 80-year-old lady, whose condition was immediately deemed more critical. When she was evacuated, she was unconscious.

“There are resuscitation maneuvers that have been attempted on the spot. Unfortunately, his death was confirmed during the night, “said agent Stéphane Tremblay, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, on Saturday.

Another relative of the victim who was injured was also transported to a nearby hospital.

According to initial information, it seems that the fire was mainly raging in the entrance of the building, causing “a lot of smoke” and inconveniencing several residents, says Mr. Tremblay.

As a death has occurred, it is the Major Crimes Unit of the Sûreté du Québec which will be responsible for investigating this case. The cause remains “unknown for the moment”, we were assured on Saturday.

A fire scene technician was also sent to the scene to search for additional evidence or clues.
