Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne | The by-election will be held on March 13

The by-election in the riding of Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne will be called on Monday for a poll on March 13. The information, first reported by TVA Nouvelles, was confirmed by The Press Sunday night. The Quebec Liberal Party is betting on a defeated candidate in the last election to succeed its ex-leader Dominique Anglade.

The election aims to replace the former leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec Dominique Anglade, who officially left office on 1er last December after announcing his resignation on November 7, barely five weeks after the general elections on October 3 last.

After having suffered one of the worst electoral defeats in the history of his party, calls from former elected officials and tenors of the party to his departure had multiplied in the public square.

The Press had reported a stormy meeting of the party’s executive committee and a difficult closed-door meeting with the association presidents shortly before. The expulsion of MP Marie-Claude Nichols from the Liberal caucus was the straw that broke the camel’s back for many.

The government had until 1er June to trigger the by-election under the law.

A former candidate for the PLQ

The defeated candidate of the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) in the riding of Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques in the last election, Christopher Benninger, is the one who will try to succeed Dominique Anglade, was able to confirm The PressSunday night.

The party will announce its candidacy in the riding of Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne this Monday at 10 a.m.

The businessman had collected 15.85% of the votes cast in the riding of Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques, in downtown Montreal, during the last ballot, good for second place behind the solidarity Manon Massé .

He also ran for the nomination of the PLQ in the riding of Laurier-Dorion, also in Montreal, but ultimately withdrew.

Founder of the marketing and communication agency NewBase Médias, Christopher Benninger will thus try to keep the constituency left vacant by the departure of Dominique Anglade in the liberal fold.

The latter had been comfortably elected with 36.15% of the votes cast in the constituency on October 3. But the fight looks tight with the candidate of Quebec solidaire, Guillaume Cliche-Rivard, then came second with a score of 27.72%.

For its part, the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) will be represented by the president of its youth wing, Victor Pelletier. François Legault’s party came third in the last ballot with 17.73% of the vote.
