Tragedy in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville: an octogenarian who was in a car on the tracks was hit by a train heading for Saint-Basile-le-Grand. She succumbed to her injuries in the evening, announced the Service de police de la ville de Longueuil (SPAL).
A large perimeter was erected in this Monteregian municipality in the early evening of Friday to investigate this extraordinary accident.
A little before 6 p.m., an exo train bringing back passengers at the end of rush hour hit a car that was on the level crossing. The collision took place in a busy area, at the corner of boulevard Seigneurial ouest and boulevard Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier (route 116).
An 84-year-old woman was in the car at the time of impact and did not survive her injuries. The driver, an 83-year-old man, was outside the vehicle during the collision and was not injured.
About 40 passengers on the train were also uninjured.
Many questions are still unanswered regarding the circumstances of the accident. The investigation will determine why the vehicle was on the tracks, the speed of the train, the visibility, etc.
“For the moment, it is considered accidental”, indicates the agent François Boucher, spokesman for the SPAL.
Boulevard Seigneurial West is closed in both directions for the duration of the investigation. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.
