The Saguenay Quartet is not a new ensemble. This is, since 2017, the name of the Alcan Quartet, which delivers its first CD under this name. The most profound change lies in the composition of the ensemble, since Marie Bégin takes the place of Laura Andriani as 1er violin, “leader” who has the particularity of being born after the creation (1989) of the quartet. The chemistry with the group is excellent and Nathalie Camus, Luc Beauchemin, David Ellis take the pulse of this ball of energy which asserts itself and shines in the quartet op. 44 noh 2 by Mendelssohn. The interpretation does not have the sap and the richness of the Pacifica Quartet, but the production, remarkable, is on par with many versions. The strange thing here is the program. The Right Honorable Ravel was not the best choice at this stage, given the exceptional recent successes, with the Quatuor Hermès at the top in 2018 (La Dolce Volta, compare the 2and shutter). A rhythmic work by a fashionable Italian composer closes the ban. But the business card remains successful.
