Hindu worshipers climbed the Bromo volcano in Indonesia on Monday to throw offerings into its smoking crater, in a ceremony that has been going on for centuries.
Each year, members of the Tengger ethnic group gather around the active volcano to prepare their offerings, climb to the top and throw animals, fruits and vegetables or flowers into its crater, for the festival of Yadnya Kasada.
Devotees walked in single file to the summit to make offerings to the volcano in hopes of attracting the benevolence of the gods and ensuring the prosperity of the Tengger community, an ethnic group from the east of the island. of Java.
Other villagers stand on the slopes inside the crater with nets hoping to scavenge some of the offerings before they sink to the bottom of the crater.
