Two-time major champion Zach Johnson takes over as Ryder Cup captain, guiding an American side as they attempt to end 30 years without a win on European soil.

Three people with knowledge of the decision confirmed the nomination to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as the PGA of America has yet to announce Johnson’s selection.
The PGA has scheduled a press conference on Monday morning to announce the identity of the new captain.
The decision is not a surprise, however. Johnson, 45, has served as an alternate captain in each of the last two tournaments, and Team USA has looked to captains with previous experience.
The 2023 matches are scheduled at Marco Simone Golf Club, on the outskirts of Rome. The Americans are coming off a historic Ryder Cup win, defeating Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits last September with Steve Stricker as captain.
Stricker is part of the Ryder Cup committee — three PGA Tour players and three PGA of America executives — that chose the next captain.
Europe has yet to name its captain, a process that has been slowed because some candidates were considering joining a rival Saudi-funded circuit that has yet to start.
The Americans have only won the Ryder Cup four times in the last 13 editions, and their last victory on European soil was in 1993 at the Belfry in England.
