A trial awaited across the Channel. HASaccused of violence against his companion, Ryan Giggs appears in front of British justice in Manchester, from Monday August 8. These accusations led the ex-winger to resign as Wales manager ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

The legend of Manchester United (963 games, 169 goals) is accused of assaulting Kate Greville, who was then his companion, during an argument on November 1, 2020. He must also answer for the offense of “controlling behavior” on his companion during their relationship, which began in 2017 and ended on the day of the facts with which he is accused. This head of prosecution covers acts of “isolation, belittlement, humiliation, harassment, degradation and ill-treatment”.

Aged 48, Giggs pleads not guilty to the charges against him, punishable by a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The trial is to last ten days. Giggs, arrested at his home at the time of the events and released, is also charged with violence against the sister of his ex-partner, Emma Greville. His trial was originally scheduled for January, but had to be postponed due to backlogs in the courts.

The hearing begins two days before the opening of another trial targeting another footballer. Frenchman Benjamin Mendy is indeed on trial from Wednesday for rape and sexual assault on seven women.
