Rwanda wants to expand the habitat of mountain gorillas that have become too numerous

In the Volcanoes National Park, Rwandan gorillas find themselves in cramped conditions due to overpopulation which threatens their habitat and that of humans.

Over a thousand mountain gorillas live in the Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Their conservation and the increase in their number are real successes for this animal, which was only endangered not long ago. But today, this resurgence is not without consequences, as these large animals are now forced to struggle to thrive in a space that has become too narrow for them.

Particularly involved in their protection, Rwanda plans to expand their living space. To do this, he has undertaken to strictly supervise the tourist activity that they generate, but also to compensate and rehouse their human neighbors.

Twelve photos by Simon Maina accompany this AFP report produced in the park in October 2021.
