Russian vodka, caviar and diamonds targeted by sanctions in Canada

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced on Friday a new wave of sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s regime, including a ban on imports of Russian vodka, caviar and diamonds.

The import ban on certain luxury goods from Russia covers alcoholic beverages, fish and seafood.

Canada also bans the export of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages to Russia, as well as brand name clothing, training shoes and sportswear.

The sanctions also include a ban on exporting jewellery, works of art and even kitchen utensils from Canada to Russia.

Ms. Joly also imposes sanctions on 14 other people, including oligarchs linked to the regime of the Russian president.

Among them is billionaire Alexander Lebedev, a former KGB agent who bought two major newspapers in the UK.
