The House of Commons passed a motion on Monday to send that clear message to the Kremlin as it continues consultations in occupied Ukrainian territories. Referendums are sometimes held at gunpoint, according to several media reports in recent days.
In addition to condemning “in the strongest possible terms the sham referendums being held in the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine”, the House of Commons “declares that it does not and will never recognize the legitimacy of these referendums,” says the wording of the unanimously adopted motion.
It also urges the Canadian government to “continue to provide support to Ukraine until the entire territory of Ukraine is once again under the sovereign control of the Government of Ukraine”, including through military, financial and humanitarian.
The motion, which was tabled by Liberal MP Yvan Baker, is in line with recent condemnations by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly.
One more military aircraft
Earlier in the day, the Department of National Defense announced the addition of a third CC-130J Hercules aircraft to cargo delivery operations conducted from a center in Prestwick, Scotland.
Leveraging the use of this operations center will allow the Royal Canadian Air Force “to get even more military aid to Ukraine,” Defense Minister Anita Anand said. by press release.
Support staff responsible for maintenance, transportation of goods and administration will also be added.
