Russian justice orders the detention until December 5 of Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva

Russian court orders pre-trial detention “until December 5” by Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, Monday October 23. The Sovetsky court in Kazan, in the Tatarstan region, says it has validated the request of investigators who arrested the journalist on Wednesday, accusing her of breaches linked to her registration in the register of “foreign agents”. Alsu Kurmasheva is the second American reporter detained in the country, alongside Evan Gershkovich.

The journalist, who lives in Prague (Czech Republic) with her husband and children, had to go to Russia for a “family emergency” on May 20. Her American and Russian passports confiscated, she found herself unable to leave Russia, before her indictment was finally announced. Last Friday, theThe Sovetsky court in Kazan affirmed that the journalist from the American media Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) was engaged in “the intentional collection of information regarding military activities” could be harmful to “the security of Russia”.

Alsu Kurmasheva faces up to five years in prison. Russia has been waging a vast campaign of repression against independent media, NGOs, journalists, lawyers and opponents since the start of its assault on Ukraine in February 2022.
