In Russia, a controversy begins to swell within public opinion. It concerns the sending of conscripts to the front, contrary to the promises of Vladimir Putin.

For the first time, Russia acknowledged, Wednesday, March 9, having engaged conscripts in the conflict in Ukraine. “The Kremlin’s response was very firm and very quick: those responsible, those who sent these conscripts to the combat zone, will be punished”, reports Luc Lacroix, of France Télévisions Moscow (Russia), quoting the Kremlin spokesman. The latter also recalled that Vladimir Putin had banned the sending of conscripts to Ukraine.

Russia specified that conscripts had been repatriated to Russian territory, while others “were taken prisoner by the Ukrainians”continues the journalist. “If simple Russians, who are doing their military service, are taken prisoner or are even killed, this can cause a stir among the population”with the risk, in the long term, “that Russian public opinion turns against the special military operation”analyzes Luc Lacroix.
