No Russian or Belarusian tennis player will participate in the Wimbledon tournament which is being held from June 27 to July 10, 2022 in England, according to information from franceinfo, Wednesday April 20, confirming information from the British daily The Times and the BBC.
Due to the war in Ukraine and in agreement with the British government, the organizers have decided to exclude some of the best tennis players in the world, including world number 2 Daniil Medvedev and number 8 Andrey Rublev. Among women, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 15th in the world, is also excluded, as is Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, 18th.
The Wimbledon organizers are the first to make such a decision. Individually, the ATP and WTA tournaments were content to impose a neutral banner. Russian and Belarusian players have already been excluded from team competitions. It is likely that they will not participate in any tournament on British soil, in particular that of Queen’s, scheduled for June 13 to 19, 2022, just after Roland Garros.
