“Due to airspace restrictions put in place by the European authorities, Aeroflot is suspending from February 28, 2022 and until further notice its flights to all European destinations,” the company said in a statement. press release issued Sunday evening.

The European Union announced on Sunday that it would close its airspace to Russian companies, in retaliation for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a measure also decided by several European countries not belonging to the EU and by Canada.

With many countries having already closed or announced the closure of their airspace, Russian air traffic finds itself facing a very large no-fly zone, forcing flights to huge detours.

In retaliation, Russia has begun to ban the overflight of its territory to planes linked to European countries that have announced such decisions in recent days, such as the United Kingdom, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Bulgaria , Poland and the Czech Republic.
