Terrorist attack in Moscow: Russia targeted several times in the past
(franceinfo)
The terrorist attack in a concert hall in Moscow (Russia) on Friday March 22 left at least 93 dead and around a hundred injured. In the past, Russia has been the target of several attacks, such as in 1999, 2002 or 2004.
Russia has never been hit by such deadly attacks. Between August 31 and September 16, 1999, five car bomb attacks against residential buildings were committed in Moscow (Russia) and in cities in the west of the country. Toll: 290 dead. Worried, the Russians are asking the authorities for more security. At the time, Boris Yeltsin was the President of the Russian Federation and Vladimir Putin was its Prime Minister. These attacks are officially attributed to Chechen separatists. In reality, they were allegedly organized by the FSB, the Russian intelligence services, to justify the outbreak of the second Chechen war.
Hostage taking in a theater in 2002
Another tragic event in October 2002. Live, Russian special forces storm a theater in the suburbs of Moscow. More than 900 spectators are taken hostage by around forty Chechen terrorists. On the morning of the fourth day, toxic gas was released inside. After the assault, 128 hostages died and all the terrorists were shot.
