Russia sanctions 61 more Canadians, including provincial premiers

Russia has imposed new sanctions on 61 Canadians, including provincial premiers, military personnel, political staff and journalists, in return for Canada’s actions against the country for its invasion of Ukraine.

Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, is now barred from entering Russia, as are five prime ministers, including Doug Ford of Ontario, Jason Kenney of Alberta, and John Horgan of British Columbia.

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem, Vice Admiral Craig Baines, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Katie Telford and former Senator Roméo Dallaire are also on the list, from as well as Justin Trudeau’s director of communications, Cameron Ahmad, and the commander of the special forces, Steve Boivin.

The sanctions also target Canadian journalists, such as the international correspondent of the Globe and Mail Mark MacKinnon, columnist for National Post John Ivison, the editor of Globe and MailDavid Wamsley, and CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Catherine Tait.

Russia claims on its Foreign Ministry website that these individuals are all “directly involved in the development, justification and implementation of the Russophobic undercurrent of the ruling regime in Canada.”

President Vladimir Putin’s regime has already barred many prominent Canadians from entering the country, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, cabinet ministers and MPs from all parties.

A subsidiary of Globe and Mail holds an investment in The Canadian Press under a joint agreement with Torstar and a subsidiary of The Press.
