War in Ukraine: Russia in open crisis with France

Since Emmanuel Macron’s declarations on February 26 on the potential sending of ground troops to Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has continued to renew his warnings against his former ally. The break seems complete.

Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron have one thing in common: they both choose their words carefully. Questioned on state television on Wednesday March 13 about his French counterpart, the Russian president plans to attack him on a sensitive subject: Africa and the supposed loss of French influence. “There are hard feelings”explains Vladimir Putin, for whom France is angry with Russia for its growing role on the African continent, thanks to the Wagner paramilitary group.

A line that has long remained open, but is well broken

The weight of words is also the remarks made in Paris on February 26 by Emmanuel Macron, after a conference in support of Ukraine. A turning point: “There is no consensus to send today in an official and assertive manner (…) ground troops. But dynamically, nothing must be excluded”, declared the head of state. Stung, the Russian president responded three days later, threateningly. An escalation, whereas two years ago, Emmanuel Macron was one of the last leaders to speak to Vladimir Putin on the phone. The line is now well broken.
