Russia announces, Friday, August 5, the expulsion of 14 Bulgarian diplomats. “This measure is a response to the totally unjustified decision of the Bulgarian side to declare persona non grata 70 employees of our institutions abroad”, Russian diplomacy wrote in a statement. And to insist: “The responsibility for these latest counterproductive measures rests entirely with the Bulgarian government.”
A staunch ally of the Soviet Union when it was ruled by the Communists, Bulgaria still maintains close cultural, historical and economic ties with Russia, even though it is now a member of the European Union and NATO. In response to the measures taken by Sofia against Moscow, Russia has already reduced its gas supplies to Bulgaria, which depends heavily on it.
