Immediately after the attack on the Crimean bridge, the Kremlin announced the end of the agreement on Ukrainian grain exports. It should logically have been renewed today, Monday July 17. What is the stake of this agreement? Explanations.

A boat left, Sunday July 16, from Odessa (Ukraine) in the direction of Turkey. It was filled with Ukrainian cereals. This is the last boat that left Ukraine, protected by the Black Sea agreement. The deal was due to expire on the evening of July 17 at midnight. But the Kremlin has just announced that it was finished, for lack of consensus to extend it. The UN cries foul. “It’s an act of cruelty”denounced Linda Thomas-Greenfield, representative of the United States at the UN.

6% of cereals were used for humanitarian operations

Since the agreement signed a year ago, 33 million tonnes of grain have been exported by Ukraine via the Black Sea. According to World Bank data, the vast majority were sold according to the law of the market, in nearly fifty countries: China, Spain, Bangladesh but also Libya. 6% of these cereals were used for humanitarian operations, especially in the poorest countries of Africa. But according to Russia, the terms of the agreement were not respected.
