Russia claims to have captured a village in the Donetsk region

Russia continues its drive to destroy the Donetsk region. After seizing a district of the strategic city of Chassiv Yar on Thursday, Russian forces announced on Saturday, July 6, that they had taken the village of Sokil. Located about 30 km northwest of the city of Donetsk, capital of the region of the same name, which Moscow has claimed to annex since September 2022, this village was “released”the Russian Defense Ministry announced.

Russian forces, which are taking advantage of the Ukrainian army’s difficulties in replenishing its ranks and obtaining more weapons and ammunition from the West, have been gaining ground for months. kyiv considers that the worst fighting on the front is currently taking place in the Donetsk region.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his demand for any peace that Ukraine withdraw from the regions it covets (Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson), while receiving Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the Kremlin, whom he claimed to see as a representative of the European Union, despite Brussels’ denial.
