The saga of sports sanctions against Russia is not about to end. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Tuesday March 8 that the Russian Football Federation (FUR) has taken legal action against the suspension of Russian teams from all international competitions, decreed last week by Fifa and UEFA. .

While waiting for the sports jurisdiction to settle this unprecedented dispute, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FUR asks it to suspend the execution of these decisions, that is to say to allow the Russians in particular to compete March the play-offs of the 2022 World Cup.

For the time being, the court based in Lausanne will open “two separate procedures”, respectively targeting Fifa and UEFA by associating about fifteen national federations which openly refuse to face the Russians, he explains in a press release. This is particularly the case for the Poles, opponents of the Russians to access the Qatari World Cup, and who ruled out participating in this confrontation even before the decision of Fifa.

The CAS should communicate “in the next few days” more details on the timetable and terms of these appeals, as well as on their possible suspensive effects. Beyond the immediate stakes for the selections and Russian football clubs, this is the first recourse against the cascade of sanctions which has fallen on Russian sport since last week.
