War in Ukraine: Russian army recruits soldiers around the world

Russia claimed Tuesday March 19 the capture of the village of Orlivka, located in eastern Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops face a more numerous enemy, because Moscow recruits soldiers in Asia or Africa.

Since the start of the conflict, Ukrainian forces have faced better-equipped Russian troops. A situation which is explained in particular by the recruitment of foreign soldiers, particularly in Africa and Asia.

Indians, Cubans, Somalis… So many soldiers are swelling the ranks of the Russian army in Ukraine. These “prisoners of war” claim to have agreed to join Moscow’s army to increase their income. On the other hand, they assure that they have not signed a contract stipulating a commitment to the front line, on the front. “I needed money for my family. An intermediary hid the reality from me”accuses a soldier who became “war prisoner”.

Recruiting agent

These foreign recruits evoke the attraction of offers published on social networks. Visas, salaries of 2,000 euros… Arguments relayed by an intermediary, Faisal Khan, charged by the Kremlin with enlisting those interested. “Russia is using these men as cannon fodder”, denounces one of the members of the management of the treatment of prisoners of war, Petro Yatsenko. Hundreds of foreign soldiers were captured by the Ukrainians.
