The Quebec feature film Ru now surpasses the million dollar mark at the box office.
The achievement of this plateau was announced on Friday by the film distribution company Immina Films and the content creation company Amalga.
The film, directed by Charles-Olivier Michaud and written by Jacques Davidts, has only been showing for less than three weeks; it remains so in more than 60 rooms.
The president of Immina Films, Patrick Roy, reports that Ru is already the sixth Quebec film to cross the million-dollar mark at the box office this year. He reminds us that we have to go back more than 10 years, to 2011, to find so many popular Quebec films.
Ru is an adaptation of the book by Quebec novelist of Vietnamese origin Kim Thúy. It tells the life of the young Vietnamese Tinh who, after a dangerous sea crossing and a stay in a camp in Malaysia, is accepted with her family as a refugee in Canada and arrives in Granby where she begins a new life.
Adaptation involves difficulties, including learning a new language and integrating into a new environment. Young Tinh, haunted by the trials of the journey, must draw from deep within herself the resilience necessary for her survival and happiness.
The film’s cast includes actors Chloé Djandji, Chatal Thúy, Karine Vanasse, Patrice Robitaille and Jean Bui.
