RSEQ football stars: the Université de Montréal Carabins dominate with 13 selections

The Rouge et Or of Laval University has only seven representatives on the all-star teams that were revealed this afternoon, the lowest total since 2007, the year when the census began on the RSEQ website.

Unsurprisingly, the Université de Montréal Carabins dominate the all-star teams with 13 selections. Quarterback Jonathan Sénécal leads the way for the regular season champions. The Concordia Stingers, the McGill Redbirds and the Vert & Or of the University of Sherbrooke complete with 5, 3 and 1 selection respectively.

For the Rouge et Or, blocker Nathaniel Dumoulin-Duguaya was elected to the all-star team for a second consecutive year, as were slotback Kevin Mital, defensive back Cristophe Beaulieu and precision kicker Vincent Blanchard.

Safety guard Félix Petit, rookie cornerback Jordan Lessard and returner Guillaume Cauchon received this honor for the first time.

“I’m a little surprised by my selection,” Petit said. It’s always flattering to receive such an honor, but the goal is to win the Vanier Cup when you come to Laval and not to win individual honors. All five of our defensive backs could have been picked. Maxime Lavallée had a big impact and Arnaud Laporte was excellent.”

Author of four interceptions, Lessard is the only rookie who finds himself on the all-star teams.

This is the first time since 2017 that the Rouge et Or have only one offensive lineman on the all-star team. Guard Samuel Thomassin was among the ten selections for the Rouge et Or in 2017.

“We collected few yards on the ground and allowed a lot of sacks and it’s a motivation to try to forget our season,” said Dumoulin-Duguay, who experienced strong emotions on Wednesday evening, while his friend Audrey Champagne scored the conversion kick that gave the Rouge et Or victory in their first match at the Canadian rugby championship. The offense starts from the line, but everyone on the unit has had trouble at one point or another. We corrected details and we want to show the true face of the offensive unit during the playoffs which are a bit like redemption.

Individual honors will be revealed on November 10, the day before the Dunsmore Cup, during a press briefing to be held at the institution that will host the provincial final.
